The events over the weekend have brought to the forefront an issue that has plagued our country for far too long. Racism and systematic oppression are prevalent and deeply rooted in our society.
The Arizona Association of Area Agencies on Aging is committed to standing against systematic racism and oppression of minority communities and communities of color. Older adults of color live a very different reality from their white counterparts. Many have faced active discrimination in employment, pay, housing, healthcare and so much more. All of these are contributing factors to the situation they face in retirement and their ability to safely and comfortably reach out for help.
Due to the discrimination and oppression that older people of color have faced throughout their lives, Area Agency on Aging staff are ready and able to address the needs of all individuals regardless of race, class, gender, sexual orientation, or any other identifying factor. Though the Arizona Aging Network has made great strides, we know there is always more work to be done. We are committed and ready to take action in ensuring that older adults have culturally appropriate and quality services.
To continue to provide these services it will take internal and external education and advocacy. We are ready.
To communities of color: we hear you and we are here to serve you.
